A neglected resort, a lost chance at love, and one last chance to renew forever.

Frankie and Tommy once dreamed of traveling the world together. But when seventeen-year-old Frank kissed Tom, their plans ended with a punch to the jaw and Frank leaving town without looking back. Thirty years later, Frank’s successful career as a journalist is interrupted by his uncle’s death and the question of his inheritance—the family resort where his childhood dreams were built. When he returns to the Pocono Mountains, however, he finds a dilapidated lodge and Tommy, the boy he never forgot.

Tom’s been keeping the resort together with spit and glue while caring for Frank’s uncle, Robert—a man he considered father, mentor, and friend—and his aged mother, who he refuses to leave behind. Now Robert is gone, taking Tom’s job with him. And Frank is on the doorstep, wanting to know why Tom is still there and why the old lodge is falling apart.

But before they can rebuild the resort, they’ll have to rebuild their friendship. Only then can they renew the forever they planned all those years ago.

aa7e2-fullsizeoutput_622This is the first series I’ve read by this author but it definitely won’t be my last. This isn’t a romance story as I would expect but a story of love that survives over the years despite the hurdles Frank & Tommy create and the distance they put between themselves. It’s not fluffy, grand gestures but real life I love you with a few obstacles thrown in Frank & Tommy’s path, including two stubborn men & one who lets his pride get in the way. I love the way the resort – a little unloved & in need of repair – mirrors the rebuilding of their relationship  Their story was heartbreaking in places for ‘what could have been’ and the years the spent apart. A great read, a great series. I can’t wait for the next book to be released.

We’re excited to welcome BLMorticia on the blog today! BLMorticia is here to tell us a bit more about their new release Push.

PushPush Music in Motion Book One from Dreampsinner Press

Malakei Oakley, aka rapper M. Prophet, is at the top of his game—but deep in the closet. Handsome, wealthy, and successful as the head of 315East Entertainment, Malakei should be on cloud nine. Despite his awards and a Midas touch that has every musician clamoring to work with him, something is missing.

Seth “Reaper” Davies is ready for stardom. His band High Stakes plays to small, packed houses all over Birmingham and London but has yet to get their big break. But Seth isn’t giving up on his dream—no matter what it takes.

A viral video prompts a message from a person he doesn’t expect—the talented M. Prophet. Their musical styles are worlds apart, and Seth has no desire to change his style to sell records. But his curiosity—and his attraction to Malakei—wins out.

Malakei can’t get Seth out of his mind. He also can’t come out without ruining his reputation. No matter how much he wants the sexy singer, his only option is to push Seth away. But he’s about to find out Seth isn’t one to give up on what he wants—and he might be just what Malakei needs.

Excerpt

Seth and Malakei meet for the first time

Malakei had gotten a text from Lena that she’d be coming in with High Stakes and family soon. He could barely hold in his excitement about seeing Seth Davies up close.Dang.

“Focus, M.” Malakei mentally checked himself and stood up when he heard the door open. He had to keep this as business because he wasn’t sure what to expect. However, Malakei had a hard time, knowing the fine guitarist was only feet away from his grasp.

“Malakei? We’re here.”

Malakei took another deep breath, then stood up. Making his way toward them, he glanced at everyone who appeared to be starstruck.

“Hello there. High Stakes and family, I presume. It’s so good to meet you.”

Lena cleared her throat. “Um, Malakei, from the left is Morty, the bassist, his girlfriend, Gina. Gio, and his mother, Theresa, and Seth along with his mother, Ethel.”

All of them said hi, and Malakei made sure he started with Morty, before greeting Seth and his mother. He kissed all the ladies’ hands and shook the band members’ hands as a gentlemanly display. The women blushed, apparently in awe.

Though Malakei didn’t spend that much time holding Seth’s hand, the feel of it wasn’t lost on him. As expected, it was rough, calloused, prickly around the tips from playing his guitar without a pick or even tape. He was a hard rocker through and through, not concerned with protecting the skin. Seth exuded rock and roll because in the minds of people like him, hard music meant sacrifice.

Other than the texture of Seth’s palms, Malakei couldn’t help but notice the outfit. Seth wore black jeans again and this time a classic Metallica T-shirt. Both hugged his lanky body like a glove, and as with most metal musicians he’d known of, they didn’t care for heavy coats. Seth wore a small leather jacket full of buttons on both lapels. Yes, he looked every bit of the part of the quintessential metalhead.

“Gods, you are even more handsome in person.” Ethel smiled at him.

“Um, thank you.” He chuckled. “And you, young lady have a very talented son. Along with his friends, I think we could help them be something special.” Malakei tried keeping his tone even. Out the corner of his eye, he could see Seth was actually at a loss for words.

“Um, yeah, Malakei,” Seth said. He held out his hand again and bowed his head slightly. “Thanks again for this opportunity. I’m totally gobsmacked you’ve asked us to play for you.”

Malakei accepted it again and gripped it firmly. “No, it is my honor. Can we offer you all something to drink? Coffee, tea, water, or soda?”

“Water for me, thank you.” Ethel spoke up first.

“Same with me,” Gina said, as did Gio’s mother.

“I’ll take soda,” Morty said.

“Me too,” added Gio.

Seth grinned at Malakei again. “Do you mind if I be different and ask for coffee? I’m a little drained and need to wake up.”

Malakei wished to follow that up with a snide remark, but he kept it to himself. “Of course. Lena, please grab refreshments while I show the ladies and gentlemen around the studio.”

Lena smiled at Malakei and walked out.

aa7e2-fullsizeoutput_622

Push features Malakei the infamous rapper who grew up in the hood of Detroit and falls in love with Seth – a struggling British heavy metal artist. Malakei is deeply closeted, he barely drinks, & doesn’t do drugs. Yet, he falls completely and irrevocably for Seth. Malakei ends up changing his life for the partying rocker that drinks excessively, smokes, and basically is everything Malakei isn’t. It’s definitely a story of complete opposites attract. But the way the two get together is done well. And in the bedroom, these men burn up the sheets!

Of course, the pair struggle due to Malakei producing Seth’s music, and how they think the world will react if anyone discovers the truth that they are together.

This story contains so much more than just romance. It deals with struggling friends, homophobia, someone targeting them, and of course the fear of coming out.

Push is a well-written story that is entertaining, romantic and a whole lot of hot and steamy.

New release & review

We’re excited to welcome Annabeth Albert on the blog today! Annabeth has brought a giveaway, but more importantly is here to tell us a bit more about their new release Better Not Pout!

better not poutBetter Not Pout by Annabeth Albert

One hard-nosed military police officer.

One overly enthusiastic elf.

One poorly timed snowstorm.

Is it a recipe for disaster? Or a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for holiday romance?

Teddy MacNally loves Christmas and everything that goes along with it. When he plays an elf for his charity’s events, he never expects to be paired with a Scrooge masquerading as Santa Claus. His new mission: make the holiday-hating soldier believe he was born to say ho-ho-ho.

Sergeant Major Nicholas Nowicki doesn’t do Santa, but he’s army to his blood. When his CO asks an unusual favor, Nick of course obliges. The elf to his Kris Kringle? Tempting. Too tempting—Nick’s only in town for another month, and Teddy’s too young, too cheerful and too nice for a one-night stand.

The slow, sexy make-out sessions while Teddy and Nick are alone and snowbound, though, feel like anything but a quick hookup. As a stress-free holiday fling turns into Christmas all year round, Teddy can’t imagine his life without Nick. And Nick’s days on the base may be coming to a close, but he doesn’t plan on leaving anything, or anyone, behind.

***

Annabeth Albert says that, “BETTER NOT POUT is a male/male holiday romance featuring endearing characters with a fun, flirty plot that will remind readers of their favorite holiday rom-coms.”

Subgenre:Contemporary Romance, Male/Male Romance, Holiday Romance, Military Romance

Better Not Pout - Banner Graphic 1

Excerpt

It was entirely possible that standing in Teddy’s office in his drawers was less humiliating than trying to squash himself onto the couch. He narrowly avoided rolling to the floor, but ended up in a sneezing fit because up close and personal, the couch smelled like a combo of woodsmoke and fabric cleaner of some kind. And his neck and thighs were both cramping, but he tried to not groan aloud.

“Yeah. You look totally comfy.” Teddy shook his head at Nick as he finished putting the game away and banking the fire. “Come on. Bed. I’ll even turn on the electric bed warmer for you.”

“We can share,” Nick said decisively. He’d slept next to men on planes and in various mission situations. Surely he could survive the temptation that was Teddy in a warm bed.

“Excellent.” Teddy’s eyes went dark and hot.

“To sleep,” Nick clarified.

“Darn. Can’t blame a guy for hoping?” Teddy gave him a smile over his shoulder as he led the way up to a cozy sleeping loft. A large, high sleigh bed that still looked too small for both of them dominated the room, piled high with colorful quilts. Teddy clambered onto the bed, crawling across it, muttering something about finding a controller but Nick was too transfixed on his bouncing ass to pay much attention to his words. It was surprisingly round and high and rather bitable and…

“See something you want?” Teddy glanced over his shoulder.

Busted. And he must have not been able to wipe the want off his expression fast enough because Teddy crawled back across the bed to kneel in front of where Nick stood, looking like some angelic offering. An offering Nick wasn’t sure he could turn down a second time.

“How about…” Teddy pitched his voice low and seductive, almost a whisper. “I get it, I’m not your type, but maybe I could turn off the lights and you could… I dunno…pretend? Just for tonight?”

“Never said you weren’t my type,” Nick said, voice like sandpaper. True, he’d been thinking just that an hour earlier, but Teddy not being his usual didn’t mean that Nick didn’t see his appeal or that the chemistry wasn’t there. And fuck, it would be so much easier if the chemistry between them didn’t crackle like the downstairs fire. His hand was apparently done taking orders from his brain that evening and reached out to stroke Teddy’s smooth jaw. “Just that it was a bad idea.”

“It’s an excellent idea.” Teddy stretched like a cat under Nick’s touch, eyes drifting shut, like he was every bit as hungry for Nick’s touch as he was to give it. And Nick gave up the fight with a groan. This was a terrible idea for all sorts of good, logical reasons, and things were likely to get awkward, but hell if he could bring himself to stop touching Teddy. He buried his hand in those golden curls, which were far softer than they looked.

And Teddy knew he’d won, closed the remaining distance between them and looped his arms around Nick’s neck. “Now do I get to tell you what I want?”

This time Nick laughed, long and low. “Yeah. You do.”

“Goody.” Teddy beamed at him. “But it’s probably gonna be easier to show you…”

With that, Teddy leaned in, slow enough that Nick could have stopped him if he’d been so inclined. Which he wasn’t. No, he’d made up his mind to have this thing. He’d deal with the consequences—and there would be consequences—like an adult, but for tonight, he was going to let himself have Teddy.

aa7e2-fullsizeoutput_622My first holiday read of the year and it was filled with festive magic and sparkle. It had everything you could wish for: a reluctant Santa, a cheerful elf, snow, a big family celebration and lots and lots of food. Reading this book was like snuggling up under a blanket in front of the fire – all the feels and heart warming.

This author really does the grumpy military man with a soft heart so well – Nick the reluctant Santa who can’t help being drawn to Teddy. And Teddy is the perfect foil for Nick with his big heart and his love of grumpy men.

I loved, loved, loved this book. If you only read one holiday story this year make it Better Not Pout!

escaping solitudeAncient vampire Andrew escaped his tropical island exile with his beloved human sailor, Edmund. They’ve now returned to Andrew’s home in nineteenth-century New Orleans and must navigate not only their developing relationship—and equally haunted pasts—but also a hungry coven of vampires Andrew used to call friends.

Desperate to stay by Andrew’s side forever, Edmund examines the impressive coven library in search of an Elder, the only creature capable of turning Edmund. Although missing for centuries, Andrew believes an Elder must still survive somewhere; they just have to find him.

The search is put on hold when Edmund receives word that his mother is ill in London, and the lovers set off on an oceanic journey surrounded by new friends and old enemies. When things go terribly wrong, Edmund’s fragile human life hangs in the balance, and an Elder must be found or Andrew will be alone forever.

aa7e2-fullsizeoutput_622

If the first book was a dark romance, then this is a hot hot hot read. A little sweet and a little humour in there too.

The story picks up from the first following Andrew and Edmunds return to New Orleans. They are now in a relationship but have to deal with Andrew’s coven of vampires he left behind when in exile.

This time the story focuses more on Edmund, and we get to know him a little better as he starts his quest to find an Elder and become immortal. But we also get to know the pair more as a couple: “I’ll never stop loving you, no matter what you do.” I take his wet face in my hands. “Do you understand that?” “No. God, no. Sounds absolutely insane. Or idiotic.”

The ending while not quite a cliffhanger, as the blurb hints at where the story is headed, it will definitely leave you wanting more from these two characters.

night moves

“He’ll steal your heart and then your car.”

Get revved up for book one in the new fast-paced contemporary m/m romance series from author Kat Cassidy.

Peter Bauer is a hard-living car thief with more skeletons in his closet than four-figure suits. Nikos Petrakis is a career mechanic who’s found himself on the wrong side of the law because of a secret of his own. Brought together by circumstance and a ’65 Shelby Cobra, they’ll have to navigate L.A.’s seedy underbelly in the sweet with heat world of Hot Wire.

aa7e2-fullsizeoutput_622

A gritty slow burn of a romance. Peter, the kind-hearted car thief, stole my heart from the start. “…Daniels Jr. had leaned in close and whispered something to her that had reduced her to tears. And that had been it; Peter had made a vow to himself right then to steal the car.” And that vow kicks off a whole lot of trouble for Peter who hasn’t had an easy life mainly due to his father. And Nik, ahh my heart ached for him.

The story is an unusual one in the way it is told with interludes between some of the chapters. The main story is told from Peter’s POV but the interludes are mainly from the women’s POV that are featured in the story and provide the backstory for the characters and help explain their actions in the present story.

A darkish tale with a view of the seedy underbelly of LA that ultimately ends happily and leaves the story nicely set up for the next book to continue. A great debut story and I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

New release review

One Step Back Cover 500When you fall for a guy who’s about to become your stepbrother—do you listen to
your heart and risk everything? Or listen to your head…and take one step back?

In high school I had a hundred reasons to steer clear of my soon-to-be-
stepbrother, Joe Beneventi. He was a hothead, and I was reserved. His life was football,
mine was academics. He wanted to be out and proud, and I desperately needed to keep
my orientation secret.

But when we fell in love, my heart took the wheel, and I took every risk to be with Joe. Then one horrible night our secrets shattered. Joe disappeared—wrecking our
families and breaking my heart.

Eleven years later, I landed a challenging job at a premier PR firm. And the hotshot
publicist who’s been assigned to my first big account? Yep. It’s Joe.

Fate truly hates me because now Joe and I have three days to hole up in a
Chicago hotel room and nail down a deal that could make or break our careers. He
keeps distracting me, but I’m too jaded to fall for sexy smiles, bedroom eyes, and his
impossible-to-ignore body. Except…

I like being close to him again. A little too much. Working together 24/7 is showing
me sides of Joe I’ve never seen before.

And when we touch, being together seems like the only step worth taking.

aa7e2-fullsizeoutput_622

On the surface, this book looks like a stepbrother romance, but it’s so much more. We start off getting to know Ash and Joe as teenagers about to become stepbrothers and already falling for each other. I love this kind of trope & while they are never truly stepbrothers, it acts as a huge catalyst for the characters.

And there’s so much to Joe than what shows on the surface. He’s not just a jock, but his own fears from his dad have influenced him more than he probably realises and the type of man he’s become. And Josh, not just a nerd, he’s managed to overcome his anxiety to be successful and push himself out of his comfort zone.

The story starts with a flashback to their time as teenagers and these are interspersed throughout the book. They seem to feed the story in the present but are also tell their own heartbreaking story woven through. These are very well done taking the reader from a high in the characters’ past to emphasise the lows in the present time.

On the surface, this book looks like a second chance romance trope, but for these characters, it’s so much more. Neither Joe or Ash were in the right place for a relationship when they first met and heartbreaking as it was that they split up now they’re back together for their HEA in a much better place.

So much more than just a romance story, it’s hot, a whole lot of heat and sexy, and it will hit you with all the feels. I’m a huge fan of this author’s writing style and would highly recommend this book.

single white incubusDoes a bear shift in the woods?

Well, partially. That was what got grizzly shifter Ted Farnsworth into trouble. He wasn’t trying to break the Secrecy Pact. He just wants people to see the real him. So he signs up with the mate-matching service Supernatural Selection—which guarantees marriage to a perfect partner. Not only will Ted never be lonely again, but once his new beaver shifter husband arrives, they’ll build Ted’s dream wilderness retreat together. Win-win.

Quentin Bertrand-Harrington, scion of an incubus dynasty, has abstained from sex since nearly killing his last lover. When his family declares it’s time for him to marry, Quentin decides the only way not to murder his partner is to pick someone who’s already dead. Supernatural Selection finds him the ideal vampire, and Quentin signs the marriage agreement sight unseen.

But a mix-up at Supernatural Selection contracts Quentin with Ted. What’s Ted supposed to do with an art historian who knows more about salad forks than screwdrivers? And how can Quentin resist Ted’s mouthwatering life force? Yet as they work together to untangle their inconvenient union, they begin to wonder if their unexpected match might be perfect after all.

aa7e2-fullsizeoutput_622A sweet & funny read although at some points I wanted to knock Ted & Q-bert’s heads together. I loved the characters though, Ted the extroverted bear shifter who prefers to spend his time with humans, and whose perfect match is an introverted abstaining incubus. According to Supernatural Selection at least as somehow they end up signing contracts to marry each other rather than the mates they were expecting.

Great world building, but a little confusing at times for me, but that may be because it is a spin-off from a series I haven’t read so some of the characters I wasn’t familiar with. I loved the whole idea of an escape clause to the marriage contract and the tasks they had to perform together which just shows them how well they can work together. If you’re looking for a low angst, sweet friends to lovers then I’d highly recommend this book.

Weekend review

452DD9B0-F4BB-4ACD-ACD8-3BA9BAC5C36BUp in the Alps, a single night can change your life.

Struggling college student and self-taught graphic artist Justin Bennet isn’t the most self-confident guy, but he knows he’s good at two things: snowboarding and sex. Why does Andi, the hot instructor at the Tyrolean ski resort, pretend Justin doesn’t exist?
Justin becomes all but obsessed with the idea of scoring with the young Austrian. Because for all the man’s reserve, he made it quite obvious he likes Justin—at least from the neck down.
When Justin books a private heliboarding trip with Andi as his guide, he thinks he’s one step away from striking gold.
But then the forces of nature take over, trapping the men in a snowstorm, and things get real. What was supposed to be about some freeriding fun and inviting a closeted guy to start exploring his options suddenly becomes about survival—and the hidden truths of the soul.

World of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the globe.

Buy on Amazon US | Dreamspinner Press

aa7e2-fullsizeoutput_622A story of two halves. I loved the setting and all the Austrian references that made me feel like I could be there on the mountainside with Justin and Andi. But then there’s Justin who for most of the story I just didn’t connect with. He comes across as spoiled and rather than flirting with Andi stalks him to borderline obsession, ‘“Why should I?” Carl scoffs. “Because he’s been ignoring you for five days straight?” “And even ran from you one time?” Jay supplies, forever helpful.’ Yet he also has a sweet side when it comes to his friends, “Yeah, about half of Jaymer’s followership is me.”

But then something happens between them up on the mountain and we finally get to hear Andi’s side of the story & Justin realises how badly he behaved and the dire consequences his actions have landed them in. From slightly annoying to sweet and by the end of the story I was rooting for them to get together. A quick read that leaves you with a satisfyingly happy ending.

escaping exileAndrew is a vampire from New Orleans, exiled to a tropical island in the 1800s as punishment for his human bloodlust. During a storm, a ship crashes off shore. After rescuing a sailor from the cannibals native to the land, Andrew becomes fascinated with his brilliant, beautiful new companion, Edmund.

Edmund is a British naturalist who has sailed the world seeking new species. Intrigued by creatures that might kill him, immortal Andrew is this scientist’s dream-but so is making his way back home. Edmund will fight to survive, even while wrapped in the arms of a monster.

As light touches and laughter turn to something much more passionate, the cannibals creep ever closer to Edmund. Can the ancient vampire keep his human alive long enough to escape exile and explore their newfound love, or will Andrew’s bloodlust seal his own doom?

aa7e2-fullsizeoutput_622A delightfully dark read of a romance. And a little bizarre. This is the first story I’ve read by the author so I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I got was a beautifully written story, “I’m a ship lost at sea, and Edmund is my compass.” with a different twist on the usual vampire tales.

A little darker, than the ones I’ve read before, “If I were to kill him, he might not even struggle – although I like that part, the struggling – and Edmund looks strong.” A little more heat than others yet darkly funny too. “”Did you have a profession?” Yes, I seduced and murdered lovely things like you.”

It’s a short read and fast paced which is slowed down by some flashbacks into Andrews life in New Orleans before his exile that paint him as somewhat of a monster but one that was easy to have some empathy for.

This is the first book that sets up the next in series well and I look forward to catching up with Andrew & Edmund again in Escaping Solitude.

Throwback Thursday Review

the mystery of nevermoreSnow & Winter: Book One

It’s Christmas, and all antique dealer Sebastian Snow wants is for his business to make money and to save his floundering relationship with closeted CSU detective, Neil Millett. When Snow’s Antique Emporium is broken into and a heart is found under the floorboards, Sebastian can’t let the mystery rest.

He soon finds himself caught up in murder investigations that echo the macabre stories of Edgar Allan Poe. To make matters worse, Sebastian’s sleuthing is causing his relationship with Neil to crumble, while at the same time he’s falling hard for the lead detective on the case, Calvin Winter. Sebastian and Calvin must work together to unravel the mystery behind the killings, despite the mounting danger and sexual tension, before Sebastian becomes the next victim.

In the end, Sebastian only wants to get out of this mess alive and live happily ever after with Calvin.

Buy on Amazon or read on KindleUnlimited

aa7e2-fullsizeoutput_622I totally fell in love with these characters. Sebastian the geeky antiques collector with a penchant for mystery novels and completely oblivious to how attractive he is no matter how he tries to hide it under his layers of grey. And Calvin? Well, he’s everything that Neil isn’t, isn’t he? Calvin gave me a few “what the hell?” moments as the story progressed but I couldn’t help but root for these two.

“I stared at the floor. “Tear up the planks! Here, here!—It is the beating of his hideous heart!” “What is that?” “Poe,” I replied. “God, you’re so weird, Seb,” Max muttered. “What else am I supposed to say?” I asked, pointing at the rotting flesh. “It’s a heart.” “Who did you kill?” “I’ll call the cops.””

A great mystery story with a good dollop of romance thrown in for good measure. “If I wasn’t careful, I was going to fall in love with this little domestic moment. I’d always wanted this. Maybe it was stupid, but sharing the chores and cooking together, spending time with someone in a comfortable, understanding silence—that was what I wanted in life.”

The ending with the great whodunnit reveal made me think of the Cluedo game. I have to admit for most of the story I didn’t even try to work out who the murderer was instead too swept up in the telling of the story. I loved the ending and can’t wait to read the next two books in the series.
